Role of Mantras

The mantras before and after the practice creates a frame and a context for the practice. This context is the transpersonal. It reaches out from the individual on the map through the broader reaches of time, space and life and consciously connects us with the transpersonal. In this way the practice becomes something that is done for all people, for all life.

The Ashtanga Mantra, or Beginning Chant, has three essential components.

  1. Recognition of the guidance principle in its plural form (transcendent reality, teacher, practice, practitioners inner teacher)
  2. The reason for the practice - deconditioning of body-mind to come into greater freedom, truth and potential.
  3. Connection through time and space to the lineage of teachers and practitioners - as one shares this practice, one is also consciously connected into this lifestream

The Mangala Mantrum, or Finishing Chant, has four key components.

  1. Prosperity for all
  2. Rule of wisdom
  3. Knowledge of the absolute and the process of learning be honoured
  4. That beings in all worlds be happy and auspicious
